Family Sessions

When were you last photographed together as a family? The busy days merge into years and the beautiful chaos of family life becomes a blur. Take some time out to realise the beauty that is right now and to create images that will be priceless for your children in years to come.

Where do family shoots take place?

Shoots are done on location in Cape Town or at my studio in Bergvliet in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Portraits in studio are classic and timeless and are all about faces and connections between people without worrying about distractions from outside.

Outdoor shoots are perfect for smaller kids who can't easily be contained or large groups of people where there is more space to be yourselves.

There is an option to combine some studio shots with a nearby location if you'd like a mix of both.

How far in advance should I book my session?

I recommend that you book your shoot for about two months prior to needing the finished product in-hand. For weekday availability, you should email me to schedule at least a month in advance. Saturdays sessions and very limited and tend to book up very quickly.

Don't wait to email me - It's never too early to get on my schedule. I sometimes also have cancellations or unexpected gaps in my schedule so feel free to send me a request even if it's last minute. Your photo reveal appointment will be approximately 2 weeks after your photo session, and your finished product (depending on what you order) will arrive between 3-4 weeks after that.

What time of day is best to shoot?

For an outdoor shoot, the best time to photograph is as close to sunrise or sunset as possible, when the light is soft and flattering.  However, I know that sometimes, with younger children, when the perfect time for light  is not the best time for their routine. I always opt for a happy child in good light than a grumpy child in perfect light.

The best months for outdoor family shoots in Cape Town are between March and October when the light is softer and the days shorter so we don't have to wake up at 4.30am to do a sunrise shoot! If you’re only around only in December, when the south-easterly wind can blow a gale, there are some more sheltered locations that can work well for family shoots too.

Before your shoot, we'll meet or chat on the phone to go through some images and gather ideas on how you would like to be photographed and if you would like anything specific for your shoot. Is there a place in your home where a large frame would look amazing? Would you like to look through an album of your photos in 20 years time? Is there a specific photo you would love to create?  We'll also go over wardrobe and how to prepare for your session.

What to wear/bring

Generally, plainer, simpler clothes without crazy patterns and stripes and logos work best. For outdoor shoots, lighter tones look better - greys, blues, yellows, corals, dusty pinks, ivories, denims and whites.

For studio shoots a mix of light and dark can work very well. Blacks, greys, reds or anything you feel great in.

Don't be afraid to mix in a little pop of colour or some pattern/accessories that can tie colour tones together.

When and how will I select my favourite images from my shoot?

I offer in-person photo reveal and ordering appointments two to three weeks after your photo session.

I do this for a few reasons - firstly for your convenience. I have a system for helping clients decide between images, showing similar images side by side for easy selection, and assisting people with getting great variety for albums and the perfect wall art pieces. Because I will show a lot of beautiful images, it can be overwhelming to choose on your own and I don't want my customer service to stop at the photo shoot. The in-person photo reveal is my favourite part of the whole process !

Many of my clients travel in from out of South Africa for their photography sessions, and is seldom practical for them to return for their photo reveal appointment a few weeks later. For these clients, remote viewing sessions via Skype are available or if time allows I can have images ready for viewing 48 hours after a shoot.

Displaying your images

I offer high quality fine art prints, framed wall collections, framed canvasses and fine art albums to display your photos. I understand the need for digital images and an equivalent-sized digital image is included with every print purchased so you can make your own reprints.

Have a look here through some of the products that I offer.

Every image presented to you will be fully retouched to make you look your best. No need to worry about that pimple that pops up the morning, your two year old with a scratch on the face or a snotty baby.

Session fees begin at R1750. For further details on pricing, please look here.

Gift vouchers

Would someone you know love the gift of a family session? I offer gift cards towards a shoot and printed images.
